8 TIPS FOR BREASTFEEDING BABIES & THEIR CHALLENGES

Breastfeeding - a wonderful act of love that strengthens the bond between mother and child. A journey full of emotions that touches our hearts and fills us with so much joy. Dear mum, in this article we talk about the breathtaking highs, but also the lows of breastfeeding. Also, here are some valuable tips that can help you overcome these challenges of breastfeeding.

Tip 1: Correct latch-on

Latching on correctly is important to making breastfeeding as comfortable and pain-free as possible for your baby and you. This means that if your baby is latching onto the nipple properly and has most of the areola in his mouth, he will suckle effectively and stimulate milk production. Make sure that your baby keeps his head and body in a straight line and that he opens his mouth wide when breastfeeding. If you are unsure, you can get help from a breastfeeding counsellor or health professional to find the right breastfeeding position and improve your latch-on.

Tip 2: Change positions

Trying different breastfeeding positions can make a big difference! Everyone's body is different, so it's important to find the positions that are most comfortable and effective for you and your baby. Here are some breastfeeding positions you can try:

  1. Cradle position: This is the classic breastfeeding position where you hold your baby in your arms like in a cradle. Support your baby's head with your forearm and hold him close to your side. This position is especially good for sitting relaxed and feeling close to your baby.
  2. Football position: In this position you hold your baby sideways under your arm, similar to a football. Support your baby's head with your hand while he or she lies at your side. The football position is especially good if you have a larger baby or have had a caesarean section, as it reduces the pressure on your tummy.
  3. Lying down breastfeeding: This variation allows you to lie down and lay your baby on their side so that your tummies are touching. This is probably the most relaxed and comfortable way to breastfeed, which is why this position is particularly suitable for breastfeeding at night.
  4. Back position: In this position your baby sits upright on your thigh while you support him from behind. This position can help if your baby has difficulty coordinating sucking.

Tip 3: Use a breastfeeding pillow

A breastfeeding pillow can help you find a comfortable breastfeeding position and relieve pressure on your back and neck. It is usually elongated or C-shaped and provides support for your arm and back while breastfeeding. By placing the breastfeeding pillow around your waist and positioning your baby on it, you can create a comfortable and ergonomic breastfeeding position. It also helps to distribute the baby's weight, reducing neck and back discomfort. The breastfeeding pillow is especially helpful if you want to breastfeed for longer or if your baby is still small and light in the first few weeks.

Tip 4: Encourage milk production

Eating a balanced diet and drinking enough fluids are crucial for good milk production. Make sure you eat a healthy, varied diet and drink enough fluids. Your body needs extra energy and fluids to produce enough breast milk. You can also support milk production by always having a glass of water within reach while breastfeeding.

Tip 5: Seek support when you need it!

You are not alone on this journey, dear mum. Seek support from your family and friends. Share experiences with other breastfeeding mums, whether in person or online. Share your experiences, hear their stories and be inspired by their encouragement. Together you can climb the highs and overcome the lows.

Tip 6: Breastfeeding at night

Breastfeeding at night is just as important as breastfeeding during the day. In the first few months, your baby will often be hungry at night and milk production is also regulated by breastfeeding at night. It is normal for babies to wake up more often at night to drink because they have a faster metabolism. Try to make breastfeeding as comfortable as possible by setting up a cosy corner in the bedroom where you and your baby can nurse in peace. Dim lighting will ensure that your baby's sleep cycle is not disturbed.

Tip 7: Nipple care

Taking care of your nipples while breastfeeding is important to avoid possible discomfort and injury. Here are some tips on how to take good care of your nipples:

  • Air dry: After breastfeeding, let your nipples air dry. This reduces moisture and promotes healing.
  • Avoid friction: Wear loose, comfortable bras that don't rub or constrict your nipples. Tight clothing can cause friction and further irritate the nipples.
  • Lanolin cream: Use lanolin cream or other special nipple creams to soothe and nourish the skin. These creams also help reduce cracking and pain.
  • Use nursing pads: Cotton breastfeeding pads absorb moisture and keep your nipples dry. Be sure to change them regularly to avoid dampness - this can cause infections!
  • Avoid soap: Wash your nipples only with clean water and avoid using soap as it can dry out the skin.
  • Alternate breastfeeding: Alternate the breastfeeding side at each feed. This way, both nipples are evenly loaded and there is less chance of overuse.

Tip 8: Be patient with yourself!

Breastfeeding is a learning process that requires time and patience. There are times when it can be difficult and challenging. Be patient with yourself, dear mama. Every breastfeeding relationship is unique and you will grow and learn together with your baby. Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them. You are a wonderful mother and your love and devotion will get you through any challenge.
